Wellness Test Results June 2024: Understanding Chiana's FeLV Management

Understanding Chiana's FeLV Management

Summary

Chiana, my Maine Coon cat, is thriving despite her Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) diagnosis. Her latest bloodwork highlights stable health, including normal liver and kidney function, balanced blood sugar and electrolytes, and strong immune system markers. Though her platelet count is slightly low, it’s not a critical concern. This report showcases her resilience on her care plan on 150 mgs of raltegravir.

1. Overall Health Indicators

  • Total Protein: 8.4 g/dL (Normal: 5.2–8.8)
Proteins in the blood are vital for immunity and overall health. Chiana’s levels are within normal range.
  • Albumin & Globulin: Albumin at 3.7 g/dL and globulin at 4.7 g/dL indicate no protein imbalances.
  • Albumin/Globulin Ratio: 0.8 (Normal: 0.35–1.5)
This ratio suggests balanced liver and immune function.

2. Liver & Kidney Function

  • Liver Enzymes: ALT (32 IU/L) and Alkaline Phosphatase (16 IU/L) are within normal ranges, indicating no liver damage.
  • Kidney Indicators: BUN at 23 mg/dL and creatinine at 1.2 mg/dL are normal. SDMA at 13.9 µg/dL confirms healthy kidney function.

3. Blood Sugar & Electrolytes

  • Glucose: 92 mg/dL, reflecting stable blood sugar levels.
  • Electrolytes: Sodium (150 mEq/L), potassium (4.1 mEq/L), and chloride (113 mEq/L) are well-balanced.

4. Immune System & Blood Health

  • White Blood Cells: 7.9 x 103/uL (Normal: 3.5–16.0)
Her immune response is healthy with no infections.
  • Platelets: 259 x 103/uL, slightly below the normal range but adequate for blood clotting.

What It All Means

Chiana’s condition is stable, with healthy organ functions and no major signs of complications from FeLV. Regular monitoring ensures early detection of any potential issues.

Final Thoughts

Managing a FeLV-positive cat like Chiana requires dedication, love, and careful observation. Her progress is encouraging, showing that proactive care can make a difference.

Test Results: June 11, 2024: Progressive: Increase

Chiana's Viral Load Update: April to June 2024

Update

Every time we take Chiana in for testing, we hope her viral load will go down. Once again, it’s gone up. It’s so frustrating to see those numbers creeping up slowly.

Test Results

Date Status Viral Load
4/19/24 Progressive 9.31 x 10⁶ = 9,310,000
Note: Dose Increased to 150 mg/day on 4/25/24
6/11/24 Progressive 13.52 x 10⁶ = 13,520,000

Analysis

Her weight has also gone up—she’s now almost 16 pounds! We’re still thinking there might be a correlation between her weight, dosage, and viral load. I’ve attached the test results above.

Yet, there’s still so much to be thankful for: Chiana is alive and acting like a typical, “ADHD” Maine Coon. She’s always been asymptomatic, and I’m eternally grateful for that.

We’re glad too that as she gets older, she keeps beating the odds that were stacked against her early on. I also hope these posts can help others in their battles with FeLV.

Next Steps

  • Increased her dosage again on 6/19/24 to 200 mg per day (100 mg twice a day).
  • Plan to have her tested again in August.
