Test Results: April 19, 2024: Progressive: Increase

Chiana's Latest Test Results: April 2024

Update

On April 19, 2024, we had Chiana tested again to check her viral load. While this isn’t the result we hoped for, we’re still convinced the increase is related to her weight. At 14 lbs, we haven’t yet found the right dosage to combat the illness and turn things around.

Test Results

Date Status Viral Load
2/29/24 Progressive 8.51 x 10⁶ = 8,510,000
4/19/24 Progressive 9.31 x 10⁶ = 9,310,000

Analysis

We suspect that the increase in Chiana’s viral load is tied to her weight. At 14 lbs, she might require a higher dosage. On April 25, 2024, we increased her dosage to 150 mg/day.

The good news is that we’ve been able to source her medication from Canada at a much lower cost. Additionally, we’ve learned that transitioning her to the adult version of raltegravir and cutting the 400 mg tablets as needed is a safe and economical long-term option. Chiana continues to show no side effects or symptoms of FeLV, and she remains a happy and loving Maine Coon with her usual calm personality.

Next Steps

  • Monitor her response to the increased dosage of 150 mg/day.
  • Transition her to the adult version of raltegravir for better cost-efficiency.
  • Retesting Date: June.

Update: Getting Raltegravir From Canada: It Worked!

When Chiana's viral load started increasing, so did the daily cost of her medication. In the U.S., one 100 mg pill cost us about $10—pretty steep! That’s when my husband began researching ways to get the drug shipped from Canada.

After thorough research, he found two reputable options offering the drug at nearly half the price:

(Both companies are also active on Facebook.)

We knew this was a bit of a risk, but the potential cost savings made it worth exploring. Both companies had physical addresses listed and plenty of positive reviews.

We ultimately chose PricePro Pharmacy due to their competitive pricing and the added convenience of a chat option on their website. (While not always staffed, I found it helpful when someone was available—a common scenario with many companies these days.)

The process was simple: I created an account, added Chiana as my pet, and uploaded a PDF of her prescription. As first-time customers, we were pleasantly surprised when PricePro contacted our vet to verify the prescription's accuracy!

However, I missed noticing that the tablets were on backorder when I placed the order (the notice was on the screen—see photo below). Thankfully, the backorder didn’t last long, and someone called me with an update.

One caveat: PricePro doesn’t accept Discover, our primary credit card. They only accept checks or other credit cards, with a 5% fee for the latter. We opted to pay by check, which required entering the check details online and later uploading a scan of a voided check. It was a bit more involved, but manageable.

The cost was further reduced thanks to discounts for first-time prescriptions and check payments. Shipping was handled by the U.S. Postal Service, and I chose the tracking option, which provided text updates as the prescription made its way to the U.S.

The prescription shipped on 3/21/24 and arrived on 3/30/24—surprisingly fast!

When the medication arrived, my husband inspected it thoroughly. While the box and container looked different (being Canadian packaging), the pills themselves were identical, which reassured us.

Overall, we’re thrilled with how this transaction turned out and will definitely consider PricePro for future prescriptions. We’re also looking into switching to 400 mg pills, which can be split, depending on Chiana’s next test results (expected mid-to-late April).
